You can see why this is called The Badlands.
The colors in the earth are various layers of mineral deposits.
It was a cloudy day when we visited the Badlands.
The colors were still visible in the layers if earth.

Cloudy Day

The mass erosion of the land combined with the large amounts of harsh mineral deposits makes this area very inhabitable. Almost nothing, except the hardiest of plant and animal life can live here.
